Islamic Domain Names for Sale

Many of you know that some anti-Islamic web-sites use the name of Islam in their domain names in order attract visitors and promote various agendas which are contrary to Islamic teachings. It is sad that many such web-sites have caused confusion for new Muslims, those curious about Islam and some Muslims who are not firmly grounded in their faith. It is particularly unfortunate that very little can be done to stop people from this type of activity and that Muslims face a serious problem in getting the word out in order to warn others about such sites. One the one hand, it is very important to tell one another which sites are legitimate and which ones are anti-Islamic. On the other hand, doing so also means revealing the names of such sites and attracting more visitors to them. And the more hits a site gets, the better rankings it gets in the search engines, making it more likely that others will find them when doing web-searches on Islam.

Until now, it has always been my policy not to reveal the names of anti-Islamic sites but to concentrate on describing their characteristics for others so that they can be recognized. Most of us in the Islamic Internet community agree that this is the best technique and that we can do more good by concentrating our efforts in building sites which portray Islam in an accurate light, putting our trust in Allah SWT that the differences will be clear to others who are unfamiliar with our faith.

(Please read Web of Deception: Don't Get Caught in It as an example of a neutral way to discuss the danger of such sites without also giving them free advertising.)

It has come to my attention in the past week that two such sites have put their domain names up for sale after they received heavy criticism for combining Islamic domain names with Christian content designed to attract Muslims towards Christianity. While they say they are selling the names in order to appease complaints put forth by Muslims and to give Muslims a chance to purchase the names for themselves, the fact is that they also stand to make a large profit from the sale of these names. Unconfirmed Sourcestell me that the price of each name is $6000 or $10,000 for both.

Let me stress that these are Unconfirmed Sourcesbecause I certainly do not want to be responsible for spreading wrong information about the prices of these names. I am actually hesitant to discuss the whole subject for fear that it is a trick designed to attract more visitors to the sites, which I have just explained above. For this reason, people who are interested in buying these names should do everything in their power to make sure that everything is legitimate. The sites are "thekoran.com" and "thequran.com" and the page describing the offer is located at the following address:

http://www.thequran.com/saleinfo.html

The deadline for buying them is listed as April 13, 2001.

Some people pointed out to me that buying these names can be a never-ending cycle for Muslims. Let's say we buy the names for $10,000. Then there is nothing to stop the same people from getting more Islamic domain names and selling them to Muslims again. Suddenly they have a nice business going at the expense of the Muslim community. To be honest with you, I do not know what the proper solution to this problem is: I only know that a site called "The Qur'an" or "The Koran" should not be in the hands of non-Muslims. The Qur'an is our Holy Book and it is sad that these popular domains do not belong to Muslims.

In the end, I find it my duty to inform other Muslims about the sale of these domain names. If you know someone who may be interested then please inform them too. But please exercise caution when investigating the propsed deal. And if you have any comments to add please e-mail me at velma_cook@yahoo.com
